What Children of All Abilities Can Learn from Climbing Walls

It’s like putting together a jigsaw puzzle on the wall. Come camping at Warrensburg Travel Park

It helps kids develop critical thinking, sequential reasoning, and fine and gross motor abilities that they can use in regular life.

Climbing’s utilization of reciprocal action (the arms and legs moving in unison).  This has been linked to greater wrist flexion and extension, range of motion, and grip strength.

Children and young people with physical limitations

have fewer options for leisure and sports activities, therefore rock wall climbing is a great alternative.

Pediatric occupational therapist Lorene Janowski, DPS, OTR/L, BCP, MS, C/NDT, from HSS.

Stating that physical exercise helps to enhance or preserve function in children with impairments after surgery by boosting their range of motion, function, and strength.

“It’s also really crucial for kids as they grow up and their OT and PT sessions per week are cut down,” she says.

“It is crucial to instill desirable behaviors in children at an early age.”

Janowski elaborates on the ways in which kids

of varying levels might benefit from rock wall climbing.

Flexibility

According to Janowski, increasing overall flexibility may be accomplished by doing simple actions.

Reaching for an out-of-reach hold or lengthening a leg for a firmer grasp.

This is essential since we are always on the move throughout the day.

Navigating different terrains and stumbling across goods stored at varying heights.

Strength

Climbing a rock face uses every muscle in your body.

The climber’s legs and glutes push off lower grips as the shoulders and back compress to bring the body upward.

Proximal strength, referring to the muscles closest to the midsection, is also necessary for rock wall climbing, according to Janowski.

The strengthening effects of rock wall climbing might be especially beneficial for children with physical limitations.

Janowski gives the example of a youngster who was previously unable to open jars or containers but who then developed the strength in their hands via rock wall climbing.

Competence in both fine and gross motor tasks

Rock wall climbing requires both fine and gross motor abilities, since it requires both an open hand grip and a tight pinch grip on small holds.

(Fine motor skills make use of the smaller muscles in the hands and wrists, whereas gross motor skills make use of the bigger ones.)

Conscientiousness of One’s Own Body

Every child, regardless of their cognitive skills, benefits from developing a strong sense of spatial awareness.

they make their way up the rock face, climbers must continually evaluate their positioning.

Adjusting accordingly in order to maintain a healthy center of gravity and to avoid falling.
